Born and raised in Sendai, Japan, Aya Aikawa grew up listening to Classical, Traditional and Pop music. As a little girl, she went to a local art school and also took Electone (electric organ) lessons at a local culture school. After dedicating most of her time to playing sports for a certain period, she came to Canada as an exchange student at the age of seventeen. She went to high school in Napanee, Ontario for one year and joined the school's drama club to practice her English.
Her love for music brought her back again to Canada in 2002. She entered a music program at Vancouver Community College where she studied jazz voice with Kate Hammett-Vaughan, a JUNO Awards-nominee, rhythm with Sal Ferreras, also a JUNO Awards-nominee, Javanese gamelan with composer Jon Siddall, as well as electronic music with composer Peter Hannan.
She later played percussion for the indie pop band The Winks and was featured in their albums Slippers & Parasol (Swim Slowly Records 2004) and Live at The CBC (also released in 2004).
She then moved to Montreal, Quebec in 2004 to extend her study at Concordia University. There, she studied with jazz vocalist Madeleine Theriault and mezzo-soprano Jocelyne Fleury and attended master classes with vocalist Jeri Brown. At the same time, she sang in the university chamber choir for three years, studied Electroacoustic and was a part of a performing arts class production directed by writer and composer R. Murray Schafer. She received a BFA degree with distinction in 2007.
Aya Aikawa has worked as a choir director (Montreal Mirror/McGill Reporter) as well as a performer, and she continues to pursue her passion and explore her personal music style through various projects and collaborations.
